The Dexter Breed

The Dexter breed is the smallest breed of British cattle. It is classed as dual-purpose, with an average cow weight of about 300kg, with a height of approximately 38" - 44" at the rump. There are three colours black, red & dun with black usually the predominate colour.
Dexters are a long lived breed & can often breed for 15 years or more. Calving problems are rare & calves are quickly on their feet, displaying the typical Dexter character & inquisitive attitude to life.
They are very efficient food converters not requiring top quality forage or large quantities of concentrates like modern breeds. A Dexter steer can be finished off grass, without supplementary feeding, to an average live weight of 350kg.
The beef is of excellent quality & flavour, & favoured by many celebrity chefs, whilst the smaller joints make it ideally suited to today's lifestyle.
